Poop! I’ve just followed a link to a slashdot article only to discover that ‘my’ IP has been banned!
Either your network or ip address has been banned from Slashdot
…due to script flooding that originated from your network or ip address — or this IP might have been used to post comments designed to break web browser rendering. Or you crawled us with a rude robot, especially one that doesn’t understand RFCs very well…
I know that NTL, my ISP, recently changed their transparent proxies so that they stopped giving out originating IP addresses. So a quick check, by pointing my browser’s proxy setting to another NTL proxy, had slashdot’s server give me the page. So I know that it is the transparent NTL proxy server that has been banned not me!
I’ll have to email NTL and see if they will contact slashdot.
Update: It’s seemed to be resolved now, without me getting round to contacting NTL. I guess there were a few people affected and someone else got in touch before me.

Damned NTL. That transparent proxy stuff screwed me up too, only it was my website that did the banning. Imagine the author of a website being banned by his own system
Oh, and it gets worse. Something to do with the routing (according to NTL) stops me from accessing my own website from home. I have to use one of NTL’s web proxies to get to my own site. How lame.
Good news is that you can access the originator’s IP using the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR environment variable in your CGI stuff. Be warned, some proxies do hide the IP.

I seem to have similar problems I want to post to slashdot but because of NTL I am banned through the use of a web proxy

What’s NTL doing ? Unless I am missing something very obvious, it overrides my proxy settings: e.g. I set firefox to connect through some anonymous proxy in spain, only to find out that I am seen out there as connecting from one of NTL’s proxy (62.253.128.12, using http://www.whatismyip.com or equivalent).
Interesting, if I test with my web site, the logs show the proxy IP 62.253.128.13.

Tom,
I suspect that because NTLs is a transparent proxy, if you are using port 80 or port 8080 for your Spanish proxy setting then NTL will intercept and proxy it anyway.
Your IP address for your comment showed up as 62.253.128.14. NTL must now be doing load balancing across multiple proxy machines, such that your apparent IP address will changes regularly (sometimes from one click to the next on the same site!)
