Karan, I have tried both US and UK settings and I get no invitations!
Interestingly, the wording on the Gmail help pages about invitations still reads like they are scarce.

I still have an “Invite a friend” section in Gmail. Is this another US/UK english difference?

that’s weird — I’ve still got the invites box. Maybe it’s because I’ve set the language to English (UK)…

Hmmm. I still have the “Invite a friend” functionality available when I log in to my Gmail account.
